DIVERSE NEW SCHOLARSHIP, FELLOWSHIP, INSIGHT DEVELOPMENT GRANT AND CANADA RESEARCH CHAIR RECIPIENTS PUSH BOUNDARIES OF KNOWLEDGE | |
The Honourable Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Transport, on behalf of the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, has announced the “2022-2” Canada Research Chairs cycle, awarding 230 new and renewed chairs across 50 postsecondary research institutions, for a total investment of more than $191 million. The chairs contribute a wide array of research in subjects from healthy aging, nanomedicine, and climate change resilience, to agriculture, and Indigenous history and policy. The minister also announced 5,762 scholarship and fellowship recipients, receiving a total of $275 million through the Canada Graduate Scholarships Doctoral and Master’s programs and Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements; the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Postgraduate Scholarships—Doctoral; the SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships; and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Doctoral Foreign Study Award. In addition, 577 emerging and established scholars received $35.3 million in 2023-24 Insight Development Grants. As well, $427 million was awarded to 148 postsecondary institutions through the 2023-24 Research Support Fund and Incremental Project Grants. | |

Ted Hewitt reappointed as SSHRC president | The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, has announced the reappointment of Ted Hewitt as president of SSHRC for a two-year term. Originally a sociology professor at Western University, where he then became vice-president, research and international relations, Hewitt came to SSHRC in 2012, as executive vice-president. He was subsequently appointed president in March 2015. He served as the Canada Research Coordinating Committee’s inaugural chair from 2017 to 2019, and was the first to serve a second term as its chair, in 2023. | | |

2024 Storyteller finalists announced | Congratulations to the 2024 Storytellers Challenge finalists! Each one receives $3,000 and is invited to present a live version of their submission May 6 at the Science Writers and Communicators of Canada conference. There, these students will have a chance to become a Final Five winner and receive an additional $1,000. Visit our Storytellers Gallery to view the finalists’ entries, selected from among over 200 submissions. Each entry tells, in up to three minutes or 300 words, a story of how social sciences and humanities research impacts Canadians. | | |

New edition of Global Centers calls for use-inspired bioeconomy research | SSHRC and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council have joined other international partners for a new edition of the United States National Science Foundation-led Global Centers initiative. The 2024 competition will support international, interdisciplinary, collaborative research centres undertaking use-inspired research to address global challenges through the bioeconomy. Two, upcoming Connection Grants and Partnership Engage Grants deadlines will vary from the regular quarterly cycle of deadline dates for these funding opportunities. Deadlines for the upcoming competitions are:
Connection Grants: May 1, 2024
Partnership Engage Grants: (New Deadline!) May 22, 2024
Connection Grants: (New Deadline!) June 20, 2024
Both opportunities will return to their regular schedule of deadlines with their subsequent competitions.

Women’s advocacy contributing holistic approaches to post-conflict peace talks | Toronto Metropolitan University associate professor Miriam Anderson is applying her Insight Development Grant to explore the long-term impacts of women’s involvement in peace negotiations post conflict. Anderson’s PhD research focused on the ultimate benefits for society and for lasting peace for including women advocates in peace talks. Those benefits include political representation for women in society, and bringing a more holistic approach to what safety means for community members. Now Anderson and her research team are studying the impacts of peace advocacy for the women involved themselves, and for their communities—even when conflicts reignite, as they did in Anderson’s focus area of Burundi. | |
Tara Lapointe, SSHRC’s new vice-president, Stakeholder Engagement and Advancement of Society | Former Michaëlle Jean Foundation executive director Tara Lapointe has joined SSHRC as vice-president, Stakeholder Engagement and Advancement of Society, effective March 18, 2024. Lapointe brings solid understanding of Canada’s research funding eco-system and the value of social sciences and humanities research funding, having held senior roles at the Canada Council for the Arts, among other organizations, and taught in Algonquin College’s Museum Studies program. Her leadership has been recognized through a 40 Under 40 Award, as well as the International Association of Business Communicators’ Distinguished Service Award. She has extensive experience in strategic communications, fostering innovation and building partnerships. Ursula Gobel retires from SSHRC April 1, leaving an inspiring legacy of leadership in promoting and supporting social sciences and humanities research and knowledge mobilization. | | | |
