New Frontiers in Research Fund: Recipients announced for 2021 Exploration stream, and innovative approaches in the pandemic special call
|
The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, and the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Health, have released the results of two New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) competitions: the 2021 Exploration competition; and the NFRF Special Call—Innovative Approaches to Research in the Pandemic Context. The $45 million investment supports 751 researchers, including 245 early career researchers, funding 102 Exploration projects and 90 Pandemic projects. Exploration funds research projects with potential for innovative results in areas from flood-resilient and climate-adaptive amphibious housing for Indigenous populations in Canada to Black creativity in the arts, sciences, technology and business.

Storytellers Challenge 2022’s Top 25 finalists announced |
SSHRC has announced the Top 25 finalists for its 2022 Storytellers Challenge. The annual competition challenges postsecondary students to inspire audiences—in up to three minutes or 300 words—with how SSHRC-funded research makes a difference in Canadians’ lives. Chosen from 230 applicants, this year’s Top 25 represent postsecondary institutions throughout Canada. The Final Five winners will be announced at Congress on May 16.

Seeking Knowledge Keepers |
Knowledge Keepers (e.g., Elders, Kitchi Anishinaabe, Grandparents) are invited to express interest, and community members are welcome to nominate Knowledge Keepers, to join the tri-agency Reference Group for the Appropriate Review of Indigenous Research. The group provides guidance to the three federal research funding agencies on peer review approaches for research conducted by and with Indigenous communities.

Grad students asked to complete tri-agency Talent survey |
To enable continuous improvement in programs, SSHRC, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council are sending a Talent survey to current and former funded graduate students to better understand outcomes and who is accessing funding. Students will receive the survey from evaluation@circum.com. Please fill yours out, or encourage your research students to complete theirs.

Funding spotlight: Access support for Ukrainian research trainees
The recently announced tri-agency Special Response Fund for Trainees (Ukraine) offers support to graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in Canada who were expected to return to Ukraine in 2022, but cannot due to the ongoing crisis, and trainees in Ukraine wishing to continue their planned studies and research in Canada. Active and eligible SSHRC grant holders can apply via a short application form.

How can we eliminate the violence and harassment forcing women out of politics?
Tracey Raney, professor in politics and public administration at Ryerson University, studies how violence and harassment keep women and marginalized people out of politics. With Canada currently ranked 59th for women’s representation among the world’s national legislatures, and studies showing diversity leads to better policies and decisions, Raney’s findings that harassment of women (especially BIPOC women) is disproportionate and ubiquitous across all parts of Canada’s political space impacts individuals, politics and democracy itself. Raney’s insights could help guide solutions.

Preparing for future health crises, with research and infrastructure
Two new, integrated research funds will help ensure Canada is ready to tackle future pandemics and other health emergencies. The tri-agency Canada Biomedical Research Fund supports high-risk, applied research, training, and talent development to establish a strong domestic biomanufacturing sector in Canada. The Biosciences Research Infrastructure Fund invests in critical research labs, equipment and facilities at postsecondary institutions and research hospitals to support cutting-edge Canadian bioscience research. Notices of intent from potential research hubs are due May 19, 2022.
