Introducing SSHRC’s 2021 Impact Award winners
SSHRC awarded five of Canada’s top social sciences and humanities researchers and research teams Impact Awards on November 30, for their extraordinary research and knowledge mobilization achievements. The 2021 Gold Medal went to University of Toronto Russian history professor Lynne Viola for her groundbreaking research into human agency, freedom and the real-life impacts of 20th-century state violence and repression. The other laureates helped draw Indigenous ways of knowing into academic research; spotlighted the white saviour complex in international development; united diverse partners to cooperatively manage coastal fisheries; and illuminated how voters interact with their democracies.

Canada Excellence Research Chairs opens 2022 competition
The tri-agency Canada Excellence Research Chairs (CERC) program has launched a competition for new chairs. The registration deadline is May 2, while the application deadline is June 1, 2022. CERC positions under the newly revised program will be for eight years, at two possible award values, with a percentage put toward indirect costs.
Canada First Research Excellence Fund accepting applications
The large-scale, tri-agency Canada First Research Excellence Fund has opened a 2022 competition. Letters of intent from eligible Canadian postsecondary institutions are due March 1, 2022, with full applications from the resulting invited institutions due August 31. The Fund boosts institutional capacity to recruit top global research talent, seek partnership opportunities, make breakthrough discoveries, and excel globally in research areas that will create long-term economic advantages for Canada.

Learning from migrants’ experiences amid COVID- 19


The pandemic closed borders, stranded migrants and has presented countries with unforeseen international migration challenges. An immigrant herself, Anna Triandafyllidou, Canada Excellence Research Chair in Migration and Integration, at Ryerson University, brings unique perspectives to the two traditionally separate fields. Her team’s research explores how migration happens—and how migrants integrate into new communities. The knowledge could lead to more equitable policies that benefit both destination and origin countries. (This story has been reposted from December 2020, given its particular, ongoing relevance.)
Canada Research Chair wins International Science Council early career award

Canada Research Chair in Climate Change and Health, Sherilee Harper, has won the International Science Council's Early Career Scientist North America Award. The University of Alberta researcher recently discussed her win, and her collaborative research on the effects of climate change on the health of Inuit and Northern populations.
